In 1923, Austrian writer and Vienna modernist and Zionist, Felix Salten, published his coming-of-age book Bambi: A Life In The Woods. Salten’s tale tells the story of forest life from the perspective of animals and plants, introducing in great detail their lives full of sight, sound and smell related learning experiences. Later, thanks to the Disney animated drama film Bambi (1942), this forest tale became a significant element of pop culture, inspiration for many environmental activists and a nightmare for hunting organizations. Walt Disney as somebody who profoundly disliked hunting recreated and simplified this story making the forest a place of paradise threatened only by one evil danger – mankind. Over the years, this culturally significant story has been the subject of considerable discussion about its true message from raising environmental awareness and ecocriticism to the representation of the Jewish nation in Europe. In an essay published in 2003, cultural historian Iris Bruce argued that Salten’s tale evokes the “experience of exclusion and discrimination.”

Almost a hundred years have passed since Salten’s book was introduced to its first readers but the story, albeit with few outdated elements, has not lost its relevance today. Now, when discussions of environmental issues, the anthropocentric world view and climate crises have gained new momentum and online book club culture, a curious side effect of the global pandemic, has become more popular, it seems the right moment to revisit the pages of this forest tale. Together with a selected group of artists from the Baltic region, an online book club was created to read Salten’s Bambi and contemplate how this story connects with their personal experiences, the environmental issues we are facing today and the reconnection with nature as part of the idea of a post-human world.

Eike Eplik, Žilvinas Landzbergas, Ingrīda Pičukāne, Laura Põld, Rūta Spelskytė and Līga Spunde are all in their own unique way known for their interest in nature and storytelling. As a result of this experimental book reading laboratory, each of them has chosen some triggering aspect of Salten’s story and created new works for the Bambi Project. Exhibited in the darkened, protective environment of Kogo gallery, the artists’ works have become a coherent ecosystem in an imagined forest.

His whole youth suddenly flashed before his eyes. The meadow, the trails where he walked with his mother, the happy games with Gobo and Faline, the nice grasshoppers and butterflies, the fight with Karus and Ronno when he had won Faline for his own. He felt happy again, and yet, he trembled. (Salten, p. 214–215)

Līga Spunde has chosen to focus on ambiguous human attitudes towards living beings and their complicated relationships with nature, a motif present also in Salten’s book. Both exhibition works represent an image of a deer in a similar pose but the situations each of them are placed in are radically different. The harmonious and carefree landscape represented in Bulletproof Glass Protecting Serenity takes its inspiration from the idealized world usually seen in Disney animations. Although the animal world built up by Disney is fictional, it represents the ideals of Western society, the desire for a place of peace and happiness. Spunde has built bulletproof glass around this idealized vision to protect the dream of the Bambi world.

Although Gobo is represented in a similar way, instead of his forest friends we see a human figure next to the deer’s body. The image is borrowed from trophy photography, where a smiling man poses with the hunted prey, creating a misleading impression of friendship between these two species. At first it is hard to see death in these kinds of photographs but recognizing its presence causes us to experience haunting chills. Gobo, although not present in the Disney animation, has a prominent place in the book representing both pet and prey. It actualizes the issue of discrimination between humans and animals, underlining the different attitudes that man has towards pets, cattle and wild animals.

Work Work Work

Curated by Wim Bosch

Despite the constant presence of technology in our daily lives, utopian predictions of replacing human resources with robot alternatives have yet to materialise. Instead of simply facilitating various processes and freeing up more time, technology has increased the pace of life beyond reason, forcing us to keep up. We hear more and more about burnout, panic attacks, depression, and various emotional disorders that have come about as a side effect of a pace of life that is too fast for us. They directly affect our abilities and our quality of life, and are reflected in the environment, in our decisions and attitudes. The scene of the installation Work Work Work is designed to be a visual allegory for the endless rush of the modern world, the eternal lack of time, and the consequences that this has on our mental wellbeing. It is a gentle reminder to take better care of ourselves and set the dates for a vacation immediately.

Lenticular prints mounted on aluminium dibond, painted acrylic resin, vinyl stickers

Solo exhibition at Tuesday to Friday gallery, Valencia, Spain

03/03 – 14/04/2023

A panic attack on a sunny day

You bring me freshly squeezed juice from the oranges in your garden and it tastes like the sun, but then thinking about the sun makes me think more about the absence of it than anything else.

It burned before I realised that some things disappear faster than others. You whatsapp me pictures of destinations with perfect weather and say that we should go somewhere that is not here, just to get away from it all for a bit. I wonder what are the things that we are able to escape from. I’m on my way to meet you when someone from around the corner sneaks up behind me. Wide-eyed, he turns to me and says that there is a long shadow following him. Be careful out there, ok?

I continue my way to the bar, it’s a weeknight so the place is half-empty, and when we are on our fourth beer, I tell you about the man with the shadow in the dark. The thin orange candle on our table is just about to reach its end when someone arrives to light a new one. The new candle is now burning in front of us and it releases a wax tear that runs down its slim body; the tear feels like it’s going down fast, but then the liquid hardens before it hits the surface, freezes into a perfect drop, and I understand that the candle is of the type that you would stick into a birthday cake, which reminds me of the anniversary that none of us want to attend, but that is approaching, or maybe just passed, and, wow, time flies, I think to myself, but then again, maybe not, maybe time is actually going against its own premise; stuck not moving.

When you can’t resolve a problem, try walking away from it to get another perspective, was the professional advice I got when I was still looking for an escape. You pinch me in the cheek, hey, you zoned out again, in an attempt to bring me back into the room, to remind me that I am here, that we are drinking beer together, and then you pick up the conversation and start talking about the anniversary that, I guess, we’re both going to, because there isn't an option to not go, and that the event, as you put it, for some reason, is making many people depressed. I watch you talk and realise that our conversation has become your monologue. It makes me want to answer in a way that ending a sentence with too many exclamation marks would sound like, but I understand that screaming would only make you bigger and stronger, the shadow would become even longer, while I would just continue dripping. Orange wax tears on my cheeks. Watery orange juice from the supermarket tastes nothing like the sun even though it tries to imitate it. My brain keeps flickering, eyes looking in every direction to find the right answer, looking for the exit sign, and at the end of the new candle someone arrives to light another one; not a place to hide, but a feeling to hold onto.

The exhibition “A panic attack on a sunny day” addresses the anxiety and uncertainty of this moment in time. The resident characters of the exhibition space can’t escape the world they inhabit. Their gazes mirror fear of what is happening around them, asking whether it is possible to get rid of the unease, and if not—what to do about it?

“You brought us gifts,” Michelle Obama said to Melania Trump on January 20, 2017, during the presidential inauguration ceremony at the White House. However, the contents of a gift-wrapped box were not publicly disclosed, and neither Melania Trump nor Michelle Obama shared what was inside. What we saw was merely a bluish box and the exact details of the offering remained disclosed. According to the noteworthy century-old essay The Gift by sociologist and anthropologist Marcel Mauss, there are no free presents, and almost everything should be reciprocated. With this in mind, in what way Michelle was expected to respond? Or was the offering she received already an ineffable expression of gratitude?

There were rumours and speculation that the incoming First Lady’s wrapped box was a frame. An empty frame, implying a box within a box? Līga and I pondered this during an exhibition opening in a private apartment in Amsterdam where she had contributed her cuboid-shaped plaster sculpture that was covered in bluish paint to look as eye-catching as a package that all the media ran through (1). We have become accustomed to the idea of giving something to others for special occasions but clearly, not all gifts are desirable, just as the viral video of Michelle’s embarrassed expression captured so well.

Līga Spunde’s exploration of the mysterious, unexpected, and probably unwanted gift involved creating a replica of the bluish box, titled You Brought Us Gifts. This sculpture was transported from her former residence in Brussels in March 2017, precisely seven years before the exhibition at apiece gallery in Vilnius. The artist, who currently resides in Riga, is also referencing her 2018 performative exhibition, Free French Fries, at Komplot in Brussels (2). Visitors to the event could taste Belgian (French) fries made from Latvian potatoes. The artist brought them from her homeland in a backpack crafted from red, yellow, and blue mesh potato bags. “(…) hideously appetising, shredded, sliced in the shape of stakes. Ideally aureate and crispy longitudinal potato pieces straight from non-polluted Latvia,” as the dish was advertised in the press release.

Through her installation showcased at apiece gallery, Līga Spunde proposes confusion rather than generosity, most likely expressing a gesture of mockery rather than addressing something specific. By partially concealing the glass walls of apiece gallery and wrapping it up almost entirely with a self-adhesive matter, the space becomes an anti-expositor. An object that is visible, yet remains hidden, reminiscent not only of public art traditions but also, perhaps unexpectedly, of neoliberal forms of advertising that can be both received as art and also confused with it. To comprehend the artist’s intention, she invites all interpretations and encourages us to consider varied notions of an (unsolicited) gift and its hidden meanings, bringing up forgotten covenants and convictions, and eventually leaving questions unanswered.

Does Līga Spunde deliberately address the potential of the unknown conceived on the eve of the United States election, coated in the midst of anti-democratic trends seen globally? For her Vilnius exhibition, she somewhat refrains from using graphic works that have become her signature in recent years. In her cartoonish work and open-ended compositions, Līga often depicts figures or deformed anthropomorphic and animal-like creatures, fairy-tale protagonists whose representations blend with those of non-human entities, drones and other devices known from our digital-realist surroundings. This amalgamation evokes a blend of fears and fantasies derived from the immediate reality we inhabit. “What is within?”—we’ll ask. “And how will it manifest to our eyes?”

Placed on both sides of the entrance to the Plant Palace, two banners depict fictional worlds inhabited by mysterious creatures, titled Eden is exhausted too. One of the references for these digital drawings is the work of Hieronymus Bosch, specifically the triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights. Echoing the spatial iconography of an altarpiece, the left and right panels of Bosch’s masterpiece depict the saved and the damned, on each side respectively.Another key source of inspiration in Līga’s work is the field of cryptozoology, which originated in Belgium with central figures such as Bernard Heuvelmans and Alika Lindbergh. Defined as a pseudoscience and subculture, cryptozoology studies folkloric or extinct animal species whose existence remains disputed or unverified. The worlds depicted in Spunde’s drawings resonate with the multitude of biomes represented in the vast greenhouse complex, alluding to unidentified and elusive creatures that might dwell within them. Some of these beings appear to have escaped the drawings, dispersed as sculptures across the grounds of Plantentuin Meise. The visitors are invited to discover these creatures on their journey through the botanic garden, following clues encoded in the imagery.

The exhibition Under the Sun began as a conversation between two contemporary art spaces located on either side of Europe: TUR in Riga and 1646 in The Hague. At a time when Europe’s social and political fabric feels increasingly fragile, it becomes necessary to reinforce cultural relationships and deepen mutual understanding through artistic exchange. Art, at its most vital, opens a space to reflect with nuance, to listen closely, and to respond thoughtfully. From this shared belief in the importance of dialogue grew the foundations of this exhibition: a collaboration shaped by four artistic practices and three curatorial visions from two independent art spaces. The exhibition, in its tone and themes, echoes the impulse that initially brought TUR and 1646 together: a desire to engage with the present through art.

The four artists in this exhibition – Eric Giraudet de Boudemange, Agnieszka Polska, Līga Spunde, and Agate Tūna – were invited for the distinct ways their practices engage with the conditions of contemporary life: how we make sense of the world around us, and how we navigate our place within it. Their works explore how we respond to a time shaped by ecological collapse, war on our borders, rising political unease, technological saturation, and a longing for spiritual grounding. The artists are united by a shared attentiveness to the emotional and ethical dimensions of contemporary life, even as their methods and materials diverge. Within the exhibition, their visions come together as an extended layer of perspective that shifts between planetary, psychological, and metaphysical realms, a constellation made up of distinct sensibilities that overlap and diverge. Together, they invite the viewer to reflect not only on what we see, but on how we respond and what forces shape our capacity to remain present, perceptive, and responsive in this liminal time.In Under the Sun, the works of Eric Giraudet de Boudemange, Agnieszka Polska, Līga Spunde, and Agate Tūna form an entangled universe. Polska’s video The New Sun casts its presence across the exhibition. Its childlike celestial narrator drifting between melancholy and absurdity as it addresses Earth through surreal monologues, love poems, and prophetic warnings. The sun speaks from above, simultaneously witness and participant, offering a poetic lens on crisis, responsibility, and the fragile cycles of life on Earth. Around this work, Giraudet and Tūna each developed new work that extend their ongoing artistic inquiries while responding to the context of TUR and the themes of the exhibition. Giraudet’s installation centres on two monumental truck forms, both sculptural objects and conceptual vehicles. They anchor an allegorical inquiry into movement, extraction, and exchange, forming a framework of objects and references that evoke the systems through which not only goods, but also values and beliefs, are transported across landscapes. Giraudet’s work reflects on how agricultural cycles shape our relationships to labour, nourishment, and survival, offering a layered perspective on the infrastructures that sustain, and strain, contemporary life.

Tūna’s works hover between recognition and speculation, reflecting on how meaning is projected onto the unknown. Abstract fragments of an original image, which she calls “creative parasites,” are fused together and act like visual glitches or digital debris. As their origins dissolve, they become entities in their own right, neither fully legible nor entirely unfamiliar. In these works, Tūna draws on a visual language of satellites, drones, and elusive aerial objects, as if low-resolution images of the sky invite us to guess at what we’re looking at. Amid the exhibition’s planetary and digital trajectories, Spunde’s work draws us back toward the body and what it means to be human. Her work emerges from a world marked by social fragmentation and psychological fatigue, proposing a space to contemplate human virtues such as empathy, resilience, and inner strength from a place of hope, humor and optimism. Through a visual language shaped by contemporary imagery and symbolic form, she explores how emotional gestures might be practiced, rehearsed, and reclaimed. It is an invitation to consider how we embody care, attention, and integrity in uncertain times.

The Mind The Heart

Solo exhibition at 1646, The Hague, The Netherlands

15/05 – 12/07/2026

Curated by: Clara Pallí Monguilod (Co-director 1646)
Johan Gustavsson (Co-director 1646)

In her first solo exhibition in the Netherlands, Latvian artist Līga Spunde transforms 1646 into a ‘gym for the heart’.

Through humour, sculptures, graphics and moving images, Spunde confronts an embodied sense of numbness, and confusion. In a capitalist society focussed on profit and efficiency, rationality is privileged over emotion, and knowledge systems rooted in care, reciprocity, and collective responsibility are devalued.

Why are we unable to experience deep feelings amidst an overflow of information and the current state of crisis? As visitors move through the presentation spaces – the reception, rehearsal and recovery area – they encounter representations of the daily struggle between emotion and rationality, or the heart and mind. The artist tries to hold on to the belief that the ability to do good and care for one another, while caring for oneself, is not lost, but undertrained – and that it all could be strengthened by practising empathy.

The exhibition is a collaboration with Kim? Contemporary Art Centre (Riga, LV).

Līga Spunde has transformed the space of TUR into a field of exercises: an abstract training ground where sculptural objects invite the visitor to rehearse human virtues. These large-scale 3D-printed forms take the shape of gestures – an embrace, interlocked hands, a stance of confidence – that evoke a sense of strength, empathy, tenderness, and care. They are not props for literal exercise, but propositions for the imagination: reminders of the irreducible movements that define our shared humanity. This conceptual field emerges against the backdrop of a world that feels increasingly ungovernable, shaped by authoritarian politics, ecological collapse, and wars waged with impunity. Spunde counters with a precise and quietly radical proposal: to rehearse belief in simple gestures, to return to the body as a site of resilience. The works do not offer solutions, but they open a space for rehearsal, for practicing the possibility of repair. They encourage a moment of self-recognition, a pause to reflect on the gestures that sustain our humanity. Scattered around the field of exercises are several smaller, almost imperceptible sculptures that invite a different discipline, to walk slowly with intention and engagement. To practice mindfulness as a human discipline.

Spunde is known for her meticulously constructed installations in which digital prints of cinematic compositions, often combined with sculptural elements, converge to examine how personal perception collides with collective structures. In Field of Exercises she departs from her signature use of the flat image and ventures into sculptural form, experimenting with the possibilities of large-scale 3D printing. This shift is not merely technical but conceptual. Where earlier works explored digital overload, psychological fracture, and emotional dissonance, here she turns toward the fragile prospect of recovery. Each sculpture operates as an open instruction, hinting at bodily participation without demanding it, while remaining a precise formal object in its own right. Echoes of physiotherapeutic practice, such as mirror therapy, where the image of a healthy limb helps repair a damaged one, reverberate through the work. She asks whether, in the face of emotional paralysis, we might similarly perform gestures of belief until they take root. There is a lightness in this premise, a tone that edges toward the childlike without ever becoming naïve. The sincerity is deliberate and exacting. In a cultural moment dominated by irony and fatigue, Field of Exercises proposes something disarmingly subversive: a space in which to practice feeling. Not because feeling is easy, but because it has become difficult, and urgently necessary.
The installation is also shaped by sound. A continuous composition by Kārlis Tone shares the space with the sculptural works, blending acoustic and electronic textures – tender and inclusive, strong yet kind. Influences range from the romantic motifs of Sibelius and Wagner to the energising pulse of gym music and the meditative atmospheres of online mindfulness channels. The soundscape is not backdrop but atmosphere, enveloping visitors in a field where movement, image, and sound converge in rehearsal.

I ought to be thy Adam; but I am rather the fallen angel.(Mary Shelley – Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, 1818)

Novelist Mary Shelley, who was the offspring of two intellectual radicals living at the turn of the 18th century and unfortunately witnessed the deaths of the closest people to her, was truly fascinated by the new discoveries in science of her time, especially those connected with electricity or electrical fluid as it was called in those days. All of that led Shelley to write her now most celebrated gothic novel Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus (1818), in which she told the story of a doctor who pushed the limits of man as creator and gave birth to a child of progress albeit a monster. This story can be read in different ways. It can be understood as a warning to man not to play God, a fantasy about the possibilities of future science or a philosophical take on our complex relationship with death. The story also reveals an obsession with human flesh, which has curious similarities to the way we look at robotic bodies these days. The element of human body parts that can be engineered together to recreate the human into something else has also become the driving inspiration for the exhibition My Bitter Sweet Frankenstein Body.

Body is a complex matter existing in different parallel dimensions – physical, virtual, mental as well as spiritual. It’s a bio-suit for all the living things, and a form giver for everything that can be perceived as existing. The body seems to be a constant battlefield of opposites – shield yet prison, vessel of joy as well as source of extreme pain and decay. It can be liquid and solid, digital and spiritual, soft and stiff, sexualised and stigmatised. The body is a shapeshifter that is never frozen, always changing, in this process turning into a trickster or a creature who can play with you and against you, becoming its own version of the creature in Shelley’s Frankenstein.

My Bitter Sweet Frankenstein Body is dedicated to the complex relationships between humans and their colonised, globalised and digitised bodies and all the hybrids and errors in between. Each of these bodily forms promises a certain exit and relief which never truly fulfils. Now that we have experienced restrictions due to the pandemic, sharing small physical spaces and trying to expand our bodies as talking heads in zoom meetings and living avatars in Instagram feeds, it seems that our inner glitches surface in an even more prominent way. People take Photoshop to extremes, the plastic surgery industry has shifted to online conference pleasing face lifts, and diet and fitness apps have become a daily dose of spam.

In the exhibition, the role of Frankenstein is taken up by artists and the curator, symbolically representing a contemporary society that constantly tries to form our bodies according to some normative frame. Each of the selected artworks represents some part of the human body that is displayed in the gallery rooms for viewing by the curious visitor. The reasoning each of the artists have for using certain elements of body parts as forms or images for their work differs from the metaphorical representation of emotions and beliefs, forms for creating a landscape, objects for talking about beauty or cultural identity, and platforms for talking about morality and censure or making a political stand. Each of the pieces is “stitched” together in one creature that is the exhibition itself representing both the Frankensteinian desires existing in contemporary society as well as the tradition of the curatorial exhibition making itself.

The exhibition is a result of a collaboration between Estonian contemporary art gallery Kogo and Titanik, exchanging their exhibition projects this year to bring Baltic artists to Turku, Finland and Finnish artists to Tartu, Estonia.

Irresistible force or force majeure is a rare occurrence. These are extraordinary unavoidable circumstances that could not be and were impossible to foresee. Force[d] Majeure is a play on words, meaning irresistible force caused by compulsion. These are circumstances that were foreseeable but were not or are not being prevented. It is force used to further particular interests, intentions or ends. Compulsive force can express itself inside a family, a school, a workplace or on social networks, anywhere at all. During such occurrences, the ends are groundlessly used to justify the means, sacrificing empathy, justice and equal treatment.

“Irresistible force” or force majeure most often turns up when contrasting and conflicting forces collide. According to the common definition, “irresistible force” applies to events including natural catastrophes, government decrees and political protests. When such circumstances arise, former liabilities/relationships are challenged due to the greater force that has (re)asserted itself. As a metaphor, force majeure also means an all-destructive force, at once powerful and ruthless. Living with the powers that be all the while sharing their vulnerability, how could individuals and particular social groups react to or even challenge what’s seemingly inevitable? What happens when someone oversteps another’s boundaries or when the boundaries of someone else are overstepped?

Considering this, Force[d] Majeure is made with an intent to create a stimulating background to discussions that touch upon moments of collision between force/power and the public, the environment and the body. The exhibition space – a public environment where a freestanding wall partitioning off the territory has been erected – is arranged to symbolize a public space, the qualities of which, through different periods, contexts and regions, are opportune for embodying and conducting messages rooted in activism and free expression of thought. The works on show, including sculptures, prints, works using typeface technique, and graffiti, pose questions about the experience of the public and its groups in interaction with systems of governance, as well as contribute to the feasibility of a potential, standing up against fallacies, groundless defamation, destructive inaccuracies, currency fluctuations and the practice of “cancelling”.

The participants are artists with international experience, whose works are in the collection of the Latvian National Museum of Art, international institutions and private collections, as well as an internationally recognized type face specialist and graffiti artists.
